First Lloyd Alexander, now Madeleine L’Engle:
“Why does anybody tell a story?” Ms. L’Engle once asked, even though she knew the answer.
“It does indeed have something to do with faith,” she said, “faith that the universe has meaning, that our little human lives are not irrelevant, that what we choose or say or do matters, matters cosmically.”

Do you agree with her, that things matter cosmically? Because I don’t, and I think we tell stories for different reasons entirely. HOWEVER I like her story-telling, and I’m glad she had whatever motivated her.

Love the comic, B. I should’ve been doing that one Friday at the children’s desk.
I don’t know if I believe that what we do and say matters cosmically. That there’s some sort of ripple effect, yes. I suppose I believe that her answer is one of the many answers to why we tell stories. I do believe the bit about faith that the universe has meaning – or maybe it’s just an attempt to poke our fingers into that meaning (as if it were a pie? I guess).
