My nine-year-old cousin was over recently, and we were making blueberry muffins (the oatmeal muffin recipe, with fresh blueberries in lieu of raisins – so tasty). Inspiration struck while we waited for the muffins to come out of the oven. He poked around in the extra blueberries, and created an original, made entirely of blueberry matter: The Blueberry Man. Finally, a good use for those pesky twigs that fall in while you’re berry picking. Behold:

And then he decided that it was not good for Blueberry Man to be alone:

And why not a third?

And then of course they need a sign.

Yes, things are ALWAYS this exciting around here.

It’s the Blue(berry) Man Group!
So do they jump up and down and squirt blueberry juice all over the audience?

Making chestnut animals is a national pastime here. You & your cousin would fit right in.

It is! I didn’t even think of that. I think they’re more like those people painted gold who stand very still on street corners – after all, no legs! I’ll tell him about the chestnut animals.

that is too funny! i was really enjoying the list of kids books (i have never read childrens lit) when i saw these. had to comment. i was wondering, could you give like a little list – 5 books to start with – in terms of getting into childrens lit. i mean, for reading, not for writing. i am going to be moving back to the usa next jan, and hopefully having my first baby later that year. i am a prolific reader and i would like to start getting into this lit, as soon as barnes and nobles is near!
