Drum roll please…

Results of the 2007 Mock(ing and scourging) Printz:

Just a refresher, these were the titles we considered:

  • Sold
  • The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing
  • It’s Kind of a Funny Story
  • Rash
  • The Book Thief
  • An Abundance of Katherines
  • Wait for Me
  • American Born Chinese
  • Rules of Survival
  • Escape!

First of all, the results were Amazingly Close. There was only one point between each book (a 1st place vote gave the book 4 points, a 2nd place 3 points, and 3rd place 2 points) which in the real award giving would never fly, but in the interests of time we left it at that.

We first did small group discussion and then voting within the group. Each of the three small groups picked the same three titles, only in different orders – eery, eh? Then we announced those results, discussed a bit more, and re-voted as a large group. My personal picks were:

  1. Octavian Nothing
  2. Sold
  3. The Book Thief

The final group results were only slightly different:

  1. The Book Thief
  2. Octavian Nothing
  3. Sold

Which, in actual award-language, would translate into The Book Thief winning the Printz and ON and Sold being honor books. Since there were no other close contenders, we stuck to 2 honor books.
So I’m exceedingly happy. Unlike last year’s mock Newbery, where I disliked some, liked a bunch, thought some were great, but didn’t LOVE any (and completely disagreed with the actual Newbery choice) I was passionate about my likes and dislikes this time around, and would’ve died a small, horrible death had Octavian not made it in the winner’s circle.

Now back to Agonizing over what 4 books to read (or reread) and review for my YA lit class. Because this decision Really Matters.
